Follow this ridiculously simple steps to make your own colored sugars and save yourself a lot of money and time. This recipe requires no special supplies and takes just a couple of minutes and can be kept in the jar for months.

Colored Sugar

Ingredients and Tool Needed

  • 1 cup of white sugar (Table sugar)
  • 2 drops of your desired food color
  • Ziplock bag / A jar with tight lid


  • Place sugar into a ziplock bag or jar with a tight fitting lid.
  • Add few drops of your desired food coloring into the sugar in the ziplock bag and zip it up, (close the lid if you are using a jar). 
  • Shake the bag or jar vigorously for about 1 – 2 minute. Adjust color with additional food coloring and repeat if the color is too light. Keep checking as you shake to see if you have your sugar to your color taste.
  • Spread sugar on aluminum foil to dry overnight.
  • Pour sugar back into jar or ziplock bag for preservation.
